It reached number 6 on the UK Albums Chart. Reissues[ edit ] Searching for the Young Soul Rebels has been reissued with bonus tracks three times.
Then, a remastered edition of the album was released in for its 20th Anniversary, including two additional tracks: Most recently, a deluxe 30th Anniversary Special Edition was released in including a bonus disc of outtakes and demos, which includes all of the bonus tracks issued with It Was Like This tracks 3—8 and 19 on the bonus disk as well as additional BBC live and demo recordings.
Packaging[ edit ] The album cover features a photograph of a thirteen-year-old Irish Catholic boy carrying his belongings after being forced from his home in BelfastNorthern Ireland because of civil unrest in The photo was included in the Evening Standard the next day and was picked up by the band nine years later. The boy later identified himself as Anthony O'Shaughnessy.
He stated that "There were tensions simmering for about three days. People did not know what was going to happen. I thought it was a dream and in the morning everything would be okay, I don't even remember the photographer doing the picture. Its striking horn motif is likely to wedge itself inside your head after listening, but the vocal arrangements are also spot on, with a call and response between Kevin and Al Archer during the choruses and some well-placed harmonies lurking elsewhere Rowland almost drowns these out, mind.
This is the sound of a band hitting a smooth groove — bringing the 60s into the s as authentically as possible — and succeeding on almost every level. Below the horns, the organ work adds various florushes, while the whole thing is held together by the solid rhythm section. The album was a success, peaking at 6 in the UK chart, but the future for the band was decidedly wobbly.
Rowland gathered together a new bunch of musicians and with them, a new image — they donned hooded tops and boxing boots — Rowland himself appearing with slicked-down hair and a Terry-Thomas moustache.

Their input steered Dexys away from the edgy soul influenced music of their past and further towards a hybrid of folk-pop and soul music. This would herald a new era for the band — one which is undoubtedly their most fondly remembered… Dexys Midnight Runners have never really had the credit they deserve for their music.
